Village Hall History

Henllys Village Hall

The Project to provide a New Hall

A Potted History -

The project to build a new village hall for the community has been a long drawn-out affair dating back to before 1997.

The old hall, in the lanes through to High Cross, served the community for many, many years. However, as the number of houses in Henllys grew so did the traffic through the lanes, making the location of the old hall more and more of a problem for access, parking and safety of users.

The village hall committee embarked on a project to build a new hall in a better location. With the support of Henllys Community Council and Torfaen County Borough Council the project was started but little did everyone realise in those early days the many obstacles that would beset them.

Land in the centre of the village was identified for a new village hall together with some residential buildings and planning permission was granted on the condition that the builder must build the village hall at an agreed cost before the residential buildings could be sold.

There have been many changes of builders along the way - Mowlems, Beazer, Persimmon, and with each change the goal posts moved; legal issues, land registry issues, failed Lottery funding and more recently the slump in the housing market have all resulted in long delays and frustration.

Where Are We Now 2010?

We are now finally on the verge of opening our new hall.

The old hall was sold and the proceeds banked ready to pay for the build of the new hall (with some additional funding from Henllys Community Council and Torfaen County Borough Council).

Contracts were signed with a local builder, Pendragon Design and Build Ltd., and work started on the site earlier this year. Our new hall will be handed over to the village hall committee in December and the committee are already taking bookings from January 2011 onwards.

In addition to the main hall the new hall will have a smaller room suitable for meetings, an office, a bar, a kitchen, foyer, toilets and storage. There will also be a dedicated car park for the village hall.
